WOW! I felt like I was hit by a truck this morning. I figured since I was starting back to work yesterday I could also go for a run. Well, I was pretty sore this morning and I think it was mostly from the run since I only went  into work yesterday for a short afternoon shift. I was just telling Jim on Monday while we were out hiking that I felt really out of shape. Now I know why…because I really am!

Things went well at work yesterday and I am confident that they will continue to go well. I just have some stiffness in the morning or when my wrist has been idle for some time. Plus the lack of full range of motion, but that should come with time.

Jim and I did a 12 mile over night hike on Monday. It was the first time since my accident that I have had a full pack on and it was pretty grueling. I have to admit the hot weather and the mosquitoes didn’t help. Plus there was no water on the trail so we both were carrying 4 liters of water each, which was probably about 10 lbs. plus all of our other gear. I have to admit I was a bit whiny. This made me commit to getting back into running. The last time I tried to run a little over 2 weeks ago my hand seemed to swell up pretty bad so I opted to wait a bit to get back into it. Now I am ready.

My next big adventure isn’t scheduled until August or September of next year so it may be some time before you hear from me again. Truly that is really a long time to wait so I may have to schedule something before then.

Wrist update

Sunday December 13,2015

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since my splint was removed. It seems I have taken a huge leap in healing. I am surprised how fast things are moving along now that the splint is gone. I was a little worried at first because everything was so tight, but seems to be loosening up quickly. I went into the dental office on Friday to cleaned Mom’s and Jim’s teeth and things went well. The wrist just seemed a little tired afterward, but no pain so I was pleased with that. I will add in some short days at work to build my strength then return to work full time the first of next year.

The swelling is still there but the OT girls tell me it could last 6 mos.

We are having very unusually weather for December so Jim and I took advantage of the beautiful day yesterday and went walking along Bulow Trail. Unbeknownst to us the trail was hosting a 50K run so we got to cheer on the hot and sweaty runners. I’m sure these runner were hoping for cooler weather when they signed up for this race.

Although this trail looks good in this picture there were some pretty muddy sections. I’m sure some of it was caused from the high traffic of the race.

It’s a work for stay day

I was up early this morning to start making split pea soup. It is a favorite recipe of mine. I’m hoping to earn my keep so shoveling out the barn doesn’t make it on the work for stay list.☺


We had lots of plans for the day. First was a hike up Mount Fphilo which had spectacular views.



Then there was a little more work for stay, but it wasn’t shoveling out the barn!

Hey Mom, I want to wish you a Happy Birthday!

Today was spectacular!!! I didn’t have to do any work and I was treated to an awesome 1hour massage! Thank you Aunt Julie.😊

These pictures are from today’s walk\run. We were walking with one of Aunt Julie’s friends and she is in great shape. Her walk pace is almost a run pace for me. Freezing in Vermont

I was up early this morning to catch a flight to Vermont. My favorite Aunt Julie and Uncle Brian bought me a ticket to come up and visit with them. I didn’t realize it would be a work for stay kind of visit.😛 As soon as I’m off the plane Aunt Julie whisks me off to the Green Mountain Club where she does volunteer work.

We had easy work…just stuffing envelopes. Although there were almost 900 of them!!! We were late getting there because of my flight so most of the work was done before we got there. I had only an hour of work before we breaked for lunch and about an hour after lunch. I have to admit it was pretty great, everyone in the room was a hiker. So I got to learn more about the long trail that Aunt Julie and I will be hiking next year together.

Built by the Green Mountain Club between 1910 and 1930, the Long Trail is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. The Long Trail follows the main ridge of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts-Vermont line to the Canadian border as it crosses Vermont’s highest peaks. It was the inspiration for the Appalachian Trail, which coincides with it for one hundred miles in the southern third of the state.

Although the Long Trail is known as Vermont’s “footpath in the wilderness,” its character may more accurately be described as backcountry. As it winds its way to Canada, the Trail climbs rugged peaks and passes pristine ponds, alpine bogs, hardwood forests and swift streams. The Long Trail is steep in some places, muddy in others, and rugged in most. Novice and expert alike will enjoy the varied terrain of the trail as it passes through the heart of Vermont’s backwoods.

With its 273-mile footpath, 175 miles of side trails, and nearly 70 primitive shelters, the Long Trail offers endless hiking opportunities for the day hiker, weekend overnighter, and extended backpacker.

Then we were off to the grocery store.  I planned to make them a spicy sausage and lentil soup that I  love for dinner.  Since today was a cold and rainy day, it would be perfect. I believe it was only in the mid 30’s. There was a chance for snow, but I never saw any. Bummed about that!

My wrist seems to be doing better. The swelling had gone back down to where it was before the splint came off and I started moving it. It also seems like the mobility is a little better. It may have been all those envelopes I stuffed. 😉

Well I guess I shouldn’t have done so much with my wrist yesterday. I am paying the price today. It swelled up like a baseball bat last night and I was applying heat at midnight and again at 5am this morning. I thought the more I used it the more it would loosen up. I think my body is telling me something now…slowdown!!! This broken bone stuff is new to me so if any of y’all can offer any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

On a funny note… My neighbors were having a baby shower and they put a large flower on my dogs favorite stop sign to signal guests to the party. Berkley had no idea what to do. He was growling and after a while decided to opt for caution and not pee on the sign.



Tuesday December 1, 2015


I had my splint removed yesterday which makes me very happy. It was really uncomfortable, but it also gave me a sense of security. Now that it is gone I still find myself being a little to cautious with my right hand. I am not use to using it. I have very little range of motion. The tendons are so tight and the muscles so weak. The OT girls have given me more exercises to do and increased the repetitions from 10 to 15. This equals about an hour of heat, massage, and exercise 3 times daily. How could I possible get bored with all this exercise? It’s like training for an Ironman again.

I drove my car for the first time yesterday. When I got in and tried to start the car nothing happened. I knew Jim has driven it for me so the battery shouldn’t be dead. So it couldn’t be the battery. Then I realized that all the lights were on so I tried to start it with my left hand and it started right up. I didn’t have the strength in my right hand to start the car! I thought I shouldn’t be driving, but away I went.

The doctor said I am about 60% healed after looking at the xrays and gave me the go ahead to go back to work when I am ready. I also got permission to start running again, but was advised to take it really easy because it can make the inflammation worse. So first thing this morning I was out running again, but only ran a few short blocks a few times during my morning walk. It is a start to getting things back to normal.
